David Devine’s collaboration with architect Koichi Takada and interior designer Mim Design has resulted in a project that is not only aesthetically stunning but also thoughtfully designed to offer the best of coastal living.
When architect Koichi Takada was seeking inspiration to design David Devine’s landmark Burly Residences, he walked across the road and sat on North Burleigh beach. It’s here where he tapped into the inspiration for Burly with a façade reflective of the gentle waves lapping the shore. “The overall vision for this project was to create architecture that blends into nature,” he says. “I love nature and wanted to bring nature back into the city and urban living. The design process is very simple, we don’t look at the buildings, we look at nature. We look at the environment that we are situated in.”
Burly Residences is testament to Koichi Takada Architects’ innovative approach to design – a fusion of modern architecture and nature, with a curved facade that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. “The shape, the colours and textures relate to the natural environment,” says Takada. “The natural surrounds, the ocean, beach, parks and the types of trees. What we ended up with for Burly was where the waves meet the sand, we saw this wonderful landscape we wanted to include in the design process.”
The project will stand as an architectural beacon on the Gold Coast, offering a seamless blend of luxury and natural beauty. Brought to life by visionary developer David Devine, it encapsulates his three decades of expertise in creating ultra-premium residential properties.
The building’s curves pays homage to the shoreline just a stone’s throw away. For Takada, architecture is not just about creating buildings but creating a symbiotic relationship between the built environment and nature. “Imagine being in your space with a picture-perfect view of the ocean infinitely expanding, the light, colours, and the beach. It has a lot of energy,” he says of the architectural elements of Burly.
The use of tactile materials, inspired by the textures and colours of the natural surroundings, further enhances the connection with the Pacific. The interiors are infused with a level of unparalleled sophistication by Mim Design. Under the leadership of Miriam Fanning, the interiors flow with understated elegance.
The beauty of the natural world is brought indoors featuring a palette of natural materials such as timber and stone, which are used to create spaces that are warm, inviting, and timeless.
Every detail, from the expansive open-plan layouts to the bespoke joinery, is designed to enhance the living experience, offering residents a sanctuary that is both luxurious and connected to the outside world. The landscaping, designed by Thomas Schubel of Lead Design Group, coexists with nature in a way that elevates the living experience. The lush tropical gardens that cascade down the terraces create a private oasis for residents, providing spaces to relax, entertain, or simply enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.
Devine’s collaboration with Koichi Takada and Mim Design has resulted in a project that is not only aesthetically stunning but also thoughtfully designed to offer the best of coastal living. The curvature of the building, mimicking the waves of the ocean, and the use of organic materials that reflect the surrounding environment, are testament to Devine’s vision of creating an architectural masterpiece that blends seamlessly into its surroundings.
